   Sightseeing in Bled

Tourist attractions & sights

There are some Bled tourist attractions and Bled sights that should not be missed. Of course there is the lake, but also the Church of the Assumption of Mary at the island in the lake and the Bled Castle are worth a visit.

Lake Bled was formed after the recession of the Bohinj glacier. It measures only 2 km by 1380 m, its maximum depth is 30.6 m. After the last Ice Age, the Bohinj glacier deepened the natural tectonic hollow into its present form. The basin was filled with water when the ice melted. The lake has no large natural tributaries; it is fed only by a few springs. A walk around the lake is 6 kilometers and shouldn't take more but a couple of hours, including the short but steep climb to the breath taking Osojnica viewing point.

The Church of the Assumption of Mary is small baroque church with a 52-metre tower on the island. It dates back to the 10th century, but the present church was built in the 17th century. In the church you will find fragments of frescoes with scenes from Mary's life. The church can be reached via a stone staircase with 99 stairs, which was formed in baroque period. There are still weddings held here and according to the local tradition, a couple will be ensured a happy marriage if the husband manages to carry his bride the 99 steps up. Ringing the bell of the church will fulfill one of your wishes. To reach the island, transport is supplied by the ‘pletna’ boats which can be caught either at the Health Park (below the Hotel Park), in Mlino or at the Rowing Centre.

On a cliff above Bled Lake on the northern side of town stands one of the oldest medieval fortresses in Slovenia: Bled Castle. Its history dates back to 1004AD, but the castle is a mash of styles because of building, adding and restyling through ages. In between the years 1951 to 1961 it was entirely refurbished by the architect Anton Bitenc. You can visit period rooms, a 16th century chapel, the wine cellar, herbal gallery and restaurant. Inside you will also find a little museum with an exhibition on the castle's history and the usual array of medieval pomp, pageantry and weaponry.

Bled other attractions

The Vintgar gorge, approximately 4 km north-west of Bled, is one of the most popular natural features in Slovenia and definitely must be a part of your Bled sightseeing trip. From Bled the route leads north towards the village of Podhom. The gorge was opened to the public on 26th August 1893. The 1.6 km long Vintgar gorge carves its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills and is graced by the Radovna river with its waterfalls, pools and rapids. The path leads over bridges and Šumer’s galleries, and ends with a bridge overlooking the delightful 16 m high Šum waterfall, the highest river fall in Slovenia. From the Šum waterfall you can take the opportunity of walking up a picturesque footpath through Hom to St. Catherine above Zasip - a historical chapel with a beautiful view. The way back goes down to Zasip and then along the road to Bled.

The Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia, and lies in the immediate vicinity of Bled. It comprises one of the most beautiful and attractive areas of Slovenia, almost the entire Slovenian part of the Julian Alps. The territory of the National Park is very picturesque and varied. The highest mountain in Slovenia is Triglav (2864 m), after which the park was named. From Triglav, deep and sharply cut valleys, mainly of glacial origin, open on all sides in the form of a fan.
