Dresden best sights

The Semperoper , offically named the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (the name Semperoper comes from the architect), is a house with an international reputation. It has a distinguished orchestra, the Sächische Staatskappelle Dresden and a worldranking roster of artist plus a vast array of guest stars, who are the talk of the town. The building style itself is debated among many, as it has features that appear in the Early Renaissance style, Baroque and even features Corinthian style pillars typical of classical Greece. It had to be rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1869. During the last weeks of World War II in 1945 the building was destroyed again - this time by Allied bombing and the subsequent fire storms. Exactly 40 years later, on February 13, 1985 the opera was rebuilt almost the same as it was before the war. During the flood of the Elbe in 2002 the building suffered heavy water damage. With substantial help from around the world, it reopened in December 2002.

The Catholic Court Church (or in german: Hofkirche) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral, located in the old city in the heart of Dresden. It is one of Dresden's best sights. Previously the most important Catholic parish church of the city, it was elevated to cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dresden-Meißen in 1964. The Catholic Court Church stands as one of Dresden's foremost landmarks. It was built by architect Gaetano Chiaveri. The church was badly damaged during World War II and was restored during the mid-1980s under the East German regime.

Sightseeing in Dresden

Steamer trips on the Elbe are offered by the Saxon Steamship Company. With eight historical paddle steamers it possesses the oldest and largest fleet of paddle steamers in the world. Two modern salon ships complete the fleet. The section of the river covered stretches from Seusslitz near Meissen via Dresden to Decin (Czech Republic). The trips on offer include panorama cruises through the Saxon Switzerland and the Saxon Elbe Land, short cruises to Pillnitz Palace, city tours, jazz and Dixieland cruises, and summer-night cruises with dancing. Further attractions are "afternoon coffee cruises“ with as much coffee and cake as you please, and special "surprise tours", where the destination remains a secret until the steamer casts off. In any case you'll be guaranteed to see Dresden's best sights.

The Old City, the historical centre of Dresden, is located on the left bank of the Elbe, at the peak of a graceful river bend. Protected for centuries by mighty fortification. The Old City is the centre of city life. Around the Altmarkt square and Prager Strasse shopping centres, restaurants, culture and work are to be found. The buildings from the Renaissance, baroque and 19th century determine the Elbe front and the face of the city. In spite of vast destruction during the Second World War, the Old City part of Dresden has preserved or regained fascinating ensembles. The most famous symbol of reconstruction in the city centre is the Dresden Frauenkirche Church, the magnificent baroque dome, which already today dominates the city centre.
