Florence is often called the cradle of the Renaissance. It was here where Michelangelo, Dante, Da Vinci and Botticelli were inspired by the tranquil landscapes and the beneficial Mediterranean climate. The world famous symbols of Florence are of course Michelangelo’s David, the Ponte Vecchio – which is the only bridge that wasn’t destroyed in WWII – and Brunelleschi's Duomo, an architectural wonder your eyes will meet upon entering the city. Regardless all those historical treasures, Florence also dispose of firm economical and industrial fundaments which makes it an important trade city. The nicest thing of Florence is that it offers its visitors an enormous amount of cultural sites at such a small surface, so you won’t lose valuable time due to buses or taxis. The danger of Florence is that you have to process an overdose of beauty. The Stendhal syndrome is not for nothing named after the 19th century French author, who suffered from a panic attack at his visit to the city because there were so many beautiful things to see!
Florence owes much of her wealth to the Middle Ages, when banking became big business because of the profitable wool trade. Florence minted the florin in 1235, the first gold coin which became the standard currency across Europe. In that period, bankers like Strozzi, Rucellai and Pitti commissioned some of the finest art and architecture in the city. But it was the Medici family that nurtured the greatest flowering of Renaissance art. The sculptures of Michelangelo, paintings of Botticelli, and the palaces of Michelozzo all flourished under their rule. Most of the action in Florence takes place between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria, the city's civic heart. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Uffizi Gallery, the Bargello, Pitti Palace and the Accademia. Wander through some of the old streets until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the Oltrarno, the "newest" part of Florence. And if you’ve seen enough of the museums and historical sites, head outdoors and spend some time at the Boboli Gardens or climb the hill to the church of San Miniato al Monte to experience an enchanting view of Florence. The combination of beauty and decay make a unique city of Florence. You will never get bored in this wonderful city!
