One of the most renowned museums in Florence is the Uffizi Gallery. The Uffizi is part of the Polo Museale Fiorentino, the town's group of state museums, along with the superb Bargello sculpture museum, the Accademia (David), San Marco, the Medici Chapels and the excellent Archaeological Museum.
Florence art galleries
The Galleria degli Uffizi is the most important art gallery of Florence and the largest of Italy. The museum is founded by the Medici family and donated to the city under explicit conditions that all the works of art would never leave the city. Another wonderful Florence gallery is the Galleria dell’ Academia, which was the first painters academy of Europe, founded by the three artists Giorgio Vasari, Agnolo Bronzino and Bartolomeo Ammanati. Here you will find the most famous sculptures of Michelangelo, including the original statue of David. The statue originally stood on the Piazza della Signoria, but was transferred to Galleria dell’ Academia for safety reasons.
Bargello is the most important art gallery in Florence in the field of the Renaissance and can be found in the Palazzo del Bargello. Here you can admire masterpieces of Michelangelo, Donatello, Verrocchio, Cellini, Luca della Robbia, and Brunelleschi. The emphasis is on sculptures. There is also a room with weaponry of the Medici’s and in the Podestà chapel you will find frescos of which is believed that they are from the hand of Giotto.
Florence museums
The San Marco Museum is the most beautiful monastery of Florence. It used to be a Dominican monastery and it shows how the monks lived in the 15th and 16th century. The San Marco has many wonderful artworks and frescos, and you can visit the monks’ “cells”. Fra Angelico painted beautiful frescos for his brothers on the walls of all their cells. Also his fresco of the Annunciation can be found here at the head of the stairs, as well as the world famous Last Supper, frescoed by Ghirlandaio at the end of the fifteenth century. Furthermore there is a magnificent library with unique manuscripts.
Palazzo Pitti houses some of the most important museums in Florence. On the first floor is the Palatine Gallery, containing a broad collection of 16th and 17th century paintings, and the Royal Apartments, containing furnishings from a remodeling done in the 19th century. On the ground floor and mezzanine you can visit the Silver Museum, displaying a vast collection of Medici household treasures. The Gallery of Modern Art is on the top floor, holding a collection of mostly Tuscan 19th and 20th century paintings. In the separate Palazzina del Cavaliere on the upper slopes of the Boboli Gardens is the Porcelain Museum, while the Palazzina of the Meridiana contains the Costume Gallery, a showcase of the fashions of the past 300 years.
