Liberation Tower
Although the Kuwait Towers are Kuwait’s most dominant landmark, the Liberation Tower in the city centre is with its 372 m the tallest building. The construction started before the Iraqi invasion but was put on hold during the invasion. Fortunately the tower received no damage and after the war construction was continued. It was meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower but upon completion in 1993, the tower was renamed the Liberation Tower, symbolizing Kuwait’s liberation from Iraq. The tower houses radio and telecommunications offices, a revolving restaurant and an observation platform – which unfortunately is now closed to the public for security reasons.
National Assembly Building
The National Assembly building is a monument that represents the modernity of Kuwait City and is a must see landmark on your culture trip to Kuwait. It was designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, an internationally renowned architect and Pritzker Prize winner who also designed the Sydney Opera House. The building is a striking combination of traditional and modern architecture. Its distinctive canopy and the two sweeping roofs were designed to evoke a traditional souk covered by a Bedouin tent. The white of the National Assembly building reflects the crystal Gulf waters on the opposite side of the road.
Tareq Rajab Museum
The Tareq Rajab Museum, in the basement of a large villa, should not be missed. This exquisite ethnographic museum houses a collection of over thirty thousand items of which approximately ten thousand are on permanent display. It was assembled as a private collection of Islamic art by Tareq Rajab and his British wife. Rajab was Kuwait's first Director of the Department of Antiquities and Museums. The Museum is divided into two parts: one area with calligraphy, manuscripts, miniatures, ceramics, metalwork, glass, jade-, wood- and stone-carvings, and an area with objects which were produced in the Islamic world during the last 250 years, like costumes, textiles, jewelry and musical instruments. The Tareq Rajab Museum is a must see part of a culture trip to Kuwait.
