The Rock of Aphrodite
The Rock of Aphrodite, in greek Petra tou Romiou (Stone of the Romans) emerges from the sea just a few miles outside the city. If you travel alongside the coastline between Limasol and Paphos, you can see the rock from the road. According to the legend, Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, rose from the waves right on this beautiful spot. Some say that is how she was born.

Paphos Castle
In 1222 this fort, originally built to protect the harbour, was destroyed by an earthquake. It was rebuilt in the thirteenth century. Throughout the years this building has served as fortress, a prison and even a warehouse for salt during the British occupation of the Paphos. In 1935 it was declared a listed monument and to this day a definite must-see during your trip to Paphos. If you’re here in September, don’t miss the annual Aphrodite Festival, where a well known opera group will perform, using the castle as their stage. The magnificent view from the top platform is a popular tourist attraction.

Tombs of the Kings
The Tombs of the Kings lie on the northernmost edge of the necropolis of Nea Paphos, to the north and east of the city walls. These impressive tombs, carved out of solid rock, were the final resting place of about 100 aristocrats and high ranking officials who lived and died in Paphos. There is no evidence of any royalty ever buried there, but it is believed that the magnificent craftsmanship of the tombs would only be fit for a king. Hence the name. This ancient greek burial site dates from 300 BC. During the centuries the artefacts have disappeared, but a powerful sense of stillness and mystery remains.
