Shopping in Riga
As it comes to shopping in Riga, the city made good progress the past years. Nowadays, Riga is the place to be for fashion lovers in the Baltic States. You will find the same stores, like Hugo Boss and Benetton, as in the western European cities. Prices of imported goods tend to be inexplicably high. Local crafts, food and alcohol, however, are still relatively cheap. The most Riga shops are scattered throughout the city, with the highest number being concentrated around the Old Town and near the centre. Audeju is the most important shopping street. Here you will also find Centrs, the oldest shopping center in Riga. This mall dates back to the Soviet era, but it’s completely renovated in 2006. Several shiny new malls have also opened on the outskirts of Riga. Most shops are open from 9AM to 5PM and closed on Sundays, however most shopping centers are open on Sundays.
Shopping center guide for Riga
Shopping in Riga is not complete without visiting one (or more) of the modern shopping malls. Spice is a huge shopping center that seems to grow every month. All of the usual shops are available as well as a huge Lido cafeteria and an indoor children's playground. Alfa is also a huge mall with pretty much the same women's and men's clothing, sports and shoe shops as the other large shopping malls in Riga, but it also offers a wide selection of restaurants, a fast food court and a cinema. Mols is a huge modern glass structure which also houses pretty much the same shops as all the other shopping malls. Stockmann offers four floors of retail space at your disposal including fashion, a huge selection of tableware, appliances and other items for your home, the biggest cosmetics shop in Riga and, best of all, the Stockmann supermarket and delicacies.
Rigas best shops
One of the best Riga shops is Blow, an outlet store with cheap designer clothing – like D&G and Gucci – of past seasons. If you like antiques, then the best shops to nose about are Antiqua, Volmar and Tango. Something you should definitely not miss is the central market (centraltirgus) in five huge market halls which were formerly used for reparation of zeppelins. This Riga market is one of the biggest in whole Europe. Here, you can wander for hours passing stalls with fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, caviar and more.
